In 2022, Ultra Throw launched UMAC (Ultra Masters All Canadian) Throws Standards. These certificates are awarded to athletes across Canada.

During our recent AGM and Club Championships at McLeod Athletic Park on Sept. 25, our club members that met or beat the standards in 2021 received the inaugural certificates. They were presented by our new president, Harnek Toor.

Unable to make the presentations were Betsy Rollins and Dan Parsons.

About UMAC: Each year on February 1st, our club will search the previous year’s results of all Canadian throwers from age 30 and up and then post the list of those throwers that meet these standards on our website (ultrathrow.com). We have already compiled the list of 2021 Canadian throwers who have achieved these high standards of excellence.

Ultra Throw athletes at the Club Championships held on Sept. 25 at McLeod Athletic Park, Langley.

The onset of the fall season is the signal to draw curtains for the track and field events for the competitive season of the year. As such, the annual Throws Championship of Ultra Throw Club was held on Sept. 25, 2022 at the McLeod Athletic Park grounds under the able supervision of the B.C. Athletics officials.

The Meet was open only for the members of the Ultra Throw Club featuring six throwing events, a Throws Pentathlon and the Throws Triathlon. A total of thirteen members had registered for the Meet, however, one has to pull out due to a pressing emergency. The events were fiercely contested by four ladies and eight gents in various age groups. There was great enthusiasm to rewrite the old B.C./ Canadian records and in the process some of them were able to do so.

The charge was led by Frances Steinfeld in the age category of 80–84 years competing in four events including Super Weight and she did the field proud with her presence.

Gabriella Moro broke two BC Records for W75 in discus and shot put.

Next was Gabriella Moro (W75), who took part in three events, excelling in all three with a highlight of breaking BC records in Shot Put with a throw of 8.90 M and in Discus Throw with a distance of 23.74 M. She did the Club proud with her sterling performance.

Robbin Whachell took part in four events and put in a personal best in all four. She tried her hand in Throws Triathlon with great success. She is translating her electronics knowledge into throwing prowess quite effectively. Hopefully, many surprises will be in the offing in the coming season.

Aimee Mergaert, our new member tried her powerlifting prowess in all the eight events and surprised everyone with her uptake and produced very encouraging results. She is a great masters athlete thrower in the making.

Dan Parsons was awarded the Challenge Trophy and Ultra Cup for top scores at the Ultra Throw Club Championships on Sept. 25.

In the gent’s category, the limelight was hogged by Dan Parsons, a prodigal new member of the Club, coming all the way from Edmonton to enthrall us. He repeated his thumping performance of CMA, Regina, where he had taken part in the Throws Pentathlon in the age category 50–54 years and had garnered 3730 points. Meanwhile jumping to the next age group now to 55–59 years, he had taken part in all eight events including the Throws Pentathlon and the Throws Triathlon. He overhauled the Canadian record in the Throws Pentathlon with 4079 Points. All other performances are Club records that are likely to stay for a long time. Dan is a worthy and most valuable addition to the Club.

Mohan Bains is another member who has shown a marked improvement in Hammer Throw, Shot Put, Weight Throw and Javelin Throw. He has improved in the Throws Pentathlon with a score of 3454 Points. He is a very fierce competitor and has a great future.

Ken Townsend, a seasoned competitor, did quite well in all the seven events he took part in. He is maintaining his composure with great courage despite adversity. He did quite well in the Throws Triathlon collecting 1633 Points. His performance in all other events has been praiseworthy.

Harnek Toor took part in all eight events and did well in the Throws Pentathlon collecting 3658 Points. His performance in all other events was also very good.

Saroop Tatla took part in all the eight events and did commendably well collecting 2639 Points in the Throws Pentathlon and 1393 Points in the Throws Triathlon.

Alan Coles, who has an earlier history as a Javelin thrower did very well by throwing it 37.54 M. He is also picking up Shot Put and Discus Throws. He did quite well by garnering 1601 Points in the Throws Triathlon.

Jaswinder Pannu, also a Javelin thrower, yet trying his hand at the Shot Put and the Discus Throw and did reasonably well in these two. He has a great promise in these events.

Aly Ismail is also a Javelin thrower, who did us proud by earning a Gold Medal in Javelin Throw in the CMA at Regina in July this year. He repeated his performance in the Meet here as well.

The performance of all members during this Meet will play a great part in reminding them to do even better in the next season. With this we say good bye to the present competition season and aspire to welcome the new with better skills and stamina.

The Club wishes to offer a big thank you to BC Athletics officials as well as our founder Dave McDonald, who was assisted by Owen Wong in putting on a very well run event.
