Ultra Throw Member has Record-breaking Year
/It may have been a late start to the track and field season due to Covid – 19, but that didn’t stop Harnek Toor from shattering Provincial and Canadian Masters throwing records in his age group (75–79). Starting on Aug. 7, he began his assault.
First down, Harnek tied the Canadian record for the weight throw (16 pounds). His throw of 15.20m tied the Canadian record set by Masters Track and Field Hall of Famer Emil Muller. Harnek also came within 5 points of equally another Masters Hall of Famer, Marek Glowacki’s record of 3958 points for the throws pentathlon (an event that tests the athlete in 5 throwing events – hammer, shot put, discus, javelin, and weight throw). In itself, these two results would be exceptional, but Harnek was just getting started.
At the BC Masters Provincial Championships in Surrey held over two days (August 21 – 22), Harnek entered and won gold in eight events. He won the triple jump, long jump, hammer throw, javelin, discus, shot put, weight throw, and the throws pentathlon. During Harnek’s gold rush, he bettered the Provincial hammer throw record with a toss of 36.53m, beating the previous record held by Marek Glowacki (36.19m). A good day became a great day when he competed in the weight throw. An outstanding toss of 15.34m broke the Canadian Record that he previously tied on Aug. 7.
Harnek was not done yet! On Oct. 10 Harnek competed in Ultra Throw’s year-end championships – a meet sanctioned by BC Athletics. At the Ultra Throw Club meet, Harnek competed in and won gold in 4 events. I guess he can be given the nickname of Mr. Gold. During this meet, Harnek bettered the M75 Provincial record in the Super Weight (35 pounds). The old record was 4.83m. Harnek absolutely crushed it with a throw of 8.01m; a toss that has him currently ranked #2 in the World Masters Rankings.
Not done yet as he still had another event to do, the weight throw. On his 5th attempt, he once again broke the Canadian record with a tremendous heave of 15.55m. OK, now he’s done!
As of this date, Harnek is ranked top 10 in the world in 4 events:
Super Weight (8.01m) #2
Throws Pentathlon (3953 points) #4
Javelin (35.05m) #4
Weight Throw (15.55m) #7
He is also in the World’s top 20 in the triple jump, hammer and shot put. His club coach, Dave McDonald, has put Harnek’s name forward for the annual BC
Athletics Performance Award, the 2021 BC Male Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, his name will be forwarded to the Canadian Masters Athletics Association to be considered for the Top Male Field Athlete of 2021.
Harnek was named Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month for October!
